Product Description Rarely does a mom or dad make it through a day without thinking they could use an extra set of hands. So First Years designed the next best thing -- a safety gate that doesn't require any hands at all! But even though it's simple for an adult to just press on the pedal and walk through, it's too difficult for a baby. The gate fits all standard doorways 29" to 34" wide, and, with use of the Gate Extension Kit (sold separately) will also fit other openings up to 44" wide. The pressure-mounted design won't damage walls or doorways. An audible click lets you know the gate has locked.
Amazon.com Product Description Because of its simple "knee-knocker" mechanism, this Hands Free Gate can do exactly what the name implies: be opened without having to use your hands. Any parent occupied with little ones and all of their necessities will quickly recognize this as a huge benefit. To operate, simply press on the pedal with your toes and then bump the knee plate with your knee. Closing is just a nudge in the opposite direction; you will hear a click when the latch has caught, offering peace of mind that it's secure again. | | The convenient foot pedal is easy for adults, but difficult for children, to open. | The pedal, knee plate, and hinges are designed so the gate can swing open from either direction. Even smarter is that the gate is purposely designed as easy-to-open for an adult, yet difficult for children. The gate's vertical bars curb curious toddlers from trying to climb over, are spaced to help prevent painful accidents, and provide ample visibility through to the other side. | | Adjustable pressure mounts don't require screws and won't mark up your walls. | Able to fit in standard doorframes (29" to 34" wide), the all-metal safety gate is a pressure-mount device. Just twist the adjustable bolts at each of the four corners to get a proper, secure fit in your doorways. (If you have wider than standard doors, The First Years sells extension kits separately that can accommodate up to 44-inch wide openings.) It should be noted that this safety gate can be a little unsteady when used at the outer limits of its range, so you may want to consider an extension kit even if using in a standard doorway. Before you buy, there are two things to be aware of. One, the actual opening for parents, kids, and/or pets to walk through is only about 18 inches wide. Two, if you want to use this in a doorway and be able to close the door, the foot pedal sticks out too far to allow this. For use with children up to 24 months.

Awesome EXCEPT for the problem solvers & larger (heavier) kids!! January 6, 2009 B. L. Dinger (Baltimore, MD USA) Don't get me wrong... It's very convenient, pretty sturdy and effective gate. HOWEVER, my daughter (at 2years and 32lbs) is the ultimate problem solver and watched me go thru the gate several times the day we installed it and figured out IF she put her feet one top the other, held onto the top and hopped/jumped onthe pedal for a few moments, she could unlatch it... she may be an extreme example, but the gates that required an adult to pinch & slide or press & lift worked better for her... they required fine motor coordination than these little tikes have yet... this gate really just requires determination and energy!
Great gate for dogs too December 27, 2008 J.E. (Baltimore, MD) We got a few of these gates to keep our dogs from going in certain rooms of the house, and they are terrific. With the knee plate you can have your hands full and just tap the gate open with your knee. The gate can be put up without drilling holes in the door frame...it just works via pressure. I got one, liked it so much we got two more.
I own three and love them all December 17, 2008 Oh Mamacita I own three, yes three, of these gates, to reign in my gloriously active, insane 15 month old. He rattles them, teethes on them, and slams them closed (when I forget and leave them open) -- and not one move out place, scratch, or dent on my wall. They are all in high traffic areas, too. They open and close shut very easily and install in minutes. I was very lucky -- my first attempt at buying a gate and I found a great one on the first shot. Highly, highly recommended.
THIS IS THE BEST GATE December 8, 2008 MKMedved (Ohio) We've owned this for over two months now. I just love this gate. 1. Does not require holes to be put in the walls. 2. Stays securely in place (my 1 yr old has tested that out). 3. Opens easily so you don't have to keep climbing over it. 3. High enough that the dog won't get over it (Rottweiler). I would definately purchase this gate again and again :o)
Best gate I've ever owned November 24, 2008 Robert C. Tatum (Corvallis, OR) I've used a bunch of different baby gates over the years to contain both toddlers and dogs. This Hands Free gate is by far the best I've ever owned. It is very sturdy, stays in place, and the foot latch works easily. I would suggest purchasing at least one gate extension with this gate. Without an extension the gate will only fit a standard bedroom door. It will not fit in a hallway without at least one extension. Save yourself some shipping by ordering the gate and the extension at the same time.
