SO attractive...and easily withstands abuse from twin boys! June 9, 2008 E. Stroebel (Appleton, Wisconsin United States) We needed a gate that would accomodate baseboards, so we knew we either had to mount a spacer on the wall, or get a gate that allowed for the contact points to be adjusted individually. Also, I knew I wanted the convenience of a swing-door. I was THRILLED that Summer Infant made this one AND it was wood to boot! It was a cinch to install; once we finessed the pressure at all four points, the gate remained solid, opening & closing just fine for nearly 2 years. My twin sons rattled and shook it almost daily. It has taken a bit of a beating, for sure, but apart from a few scratches here and there, it STILL looks great! Because we have wood floors, it blends right in with our decor. I'm so glad we haven't had to look at a plastic or white metal contraption at the bottom of our staircase this whole time. I've recommended it to a number of friends already.
our third one - but not for good reasons March 3, 2008 Karen Puglisi (islip terrace, ny) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We bought this gate and loved it at first until it broke, the wood split on a seem that wasn't glued together properly at the factory. So we returned that one a got another, well the latched just snapped and broke into a whole bunch of pieces so we brought that one back. The third one broke the same way the first one did, we won't be getting another. This gate is a piece of junk and not worth the money. It can't handle kids hanging on it the way kids do. Isn't that the whole purpose of a child safety gate? To keep your little ones out of a place that you don't want them and they are going to be on the other side of the gate trying to get in. I wouldn't NOT buy the wood one again, maybe we can try the metal one with better results.
Works well for the first several weeks.... January 21, 2008 Mom of 2 I've gone through 3 of these gates because I like the look, but have finally resolved that they're just not going to function like I want them to function. The first one I had (purchased a few years ago) worked WONDERFULLY, unfortunately, a little mishap left it broken (can't blame the construction of the gate for that one though) and I had to replace it. I bought the same gate, but the design had changed slightly since my initial purchase. This one worked OK, not as well as the first one, but I didn't have any MAJOR complaints. My 80 pound labrador went barreling through this one though and left it broken as well..so...third time's a charm right! I bought another one, and had this one I have now been the first one...I would have NEVER re-purchased. To give it enough tension to stay "stuck" in the doorway, it then makes it VERY difficult to open and close and it will definitely not swing itself closed this way (like my wonderful first one did). If you leave it loose enough to let it swing shut by itself, your toddler or your dog can knock it right over.
Terrible January 15, 2008 Lloyd W. Mcfarlin (Denver, CO) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The gate really does look nice. That's about it, though. The quality is very poor and the hinges are made of very cheap and flimsy black plastic. Because of this, it's easy to open the gate and not realize the bottom portion is still "locked in". This is because the plastic hinges are so flimsy that the gate door can kind of "twist" so that the top portion moves outward a good distance while the bottom portion is still closed. Also, the description isn't very clear (nor are the details on the box) about the extensions. The gate's advertised maximum width of 40.5" includes the extensions. If you want a similar design with a far better build quality, get the First Years Hands Free Gate instead.
Best Child Gate EVER!!! November 12, 2007 Caleb's Mom (Ohio) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a fabulous child gate! We have had in in everyday use for 2 1/2 years now with no problems. We initially registered for it to keep the pets out of our newborns' room. But now that he is a toddler and sleeping in a regular bed at night, it keeps him in his room as well. He is a strong child and very tall for his age, but has never been able to get the gate open. As far as some of the negative reviews, I think that some of the other reviewers perhaps did not install their gate correctly. You do have to make sure that you distribute the tension evening on all four corners in order to have it work appropriately. I would definitely purchase this again again...and probably will when we have a second child. I have purchased it as a gift for friends. And the wood really is beautiful...
