Great reception and other features; needs to be louder December 1, 2008

My "baby" is now almost two. We still use a monitor with him because his bedroom is downstairs and we are upstairs. Up to this point we have been using an:
Graco Digital Deluxe iMonitor Baby Monitor
This monitor picks up sound great and is very loud, but has some trouble staying connected even though our bedroom is directly above my son. I also like that it has lights that show how loud the sound is.
When I was offered the Philips Digital Screen Baby Monitor through amazon Vine; I thought I would order it and see if we could get a monitor that would actually stay connected more consistantly.
This monitor has a lot of pros:
- It was very easy to get and keep connection with the room unit even when the parent unit is moved around the house.
- The talkback feature is absolutely awesome. Especially with a toddler. When he starts yelling for "Mama" at 3am, I can tell him to go back to sleep or let him know I will be there in a minute.
- Monitors room temp.
- Unit in baby's room can play lullabyes and has a nightlight built in.
- The parent unit is small and comes with both a belt clip and a laynard to hang it around your neck.
- Both the in room unit and the parent unit can be run off of normal batteries or charged.
The biggest cons were:
- Even at full volume we can only hear if our baby cries, any other sounds in the room are muted. So it's hard to here if a cat snuck in or if he is coughing. This is at night when it is quiet, so hearing anything in a loud room is impossible.
- For the parent unit, when the backlighting is on it is very hard to read the digital temp. It's like the display doesn't have enough contrast between the two.
- There's no visual display showing how loud the sound in the room is.
Personally, so far, we like this better than the Graco iMonitor. Even though it is soft, it stays connected. Our toddler is also old enough that mainly we are interested in loud noises anyway (crashes/crying) so it's not that big of a deal. The talkback feature is a huge plus; it is wonderful to be able to talk to our toddler from upstairs.
I guess if I had a younger baby I would be more concerned about the volume not being loud enough. I know with the iMonitor I could hear my son breathing and that was a comfort to me when he was really little. As for the extra features (temp, music, nightlight) we don't really use any of them because we already have stuff that does that in his room. It could be useful though if you don't have a CD player and nightlight in the room already.
Overall I am pleased with it; too bad they couldn't up that volume though...

SUMMARY
This is a stylish monitor with useful functions (such as intercom, temperature sensor, clear reception, night light and lullaby). It has several drawbacks which prevent this from being the perfect monitor.
GOOD FEATURES
This baby monitor has a lot of great features. At the top of my list are the crystal clear reception and the temperature sensor. I've read studies in which high room temperatures can lead to SIDS, so having a sensor built in which displays the room temperature on your Parent Unit is great. It's also pretty accurate.
Unlike my previous Graco baby monitor, the connection from the Baby Unit to the Parent Unit doesn't cut off for some unknown reason in the middle of the night. I have a 5.8 ghz set of telephones, a Graco baby monitor, an Apple Airport Wi-Fi hub, as well as some neighbors' wireless systems to compete with and the Philips Avent baby monitor receives signals flawlessly. The Parent Unit and Baby Unit configured themselves to each other right out of the box.
The other good features are the intercom, which lets you talk from the Parent Unit to the Baby Unit, and the 5 built-in lullabies. The music definitely sounds better than some mobiles that I've heard.
DRAWBACKS
I would have rated this system 5 stars except for the following:
The VOLUME doesn't seem very high. You can set the sensitivity to detect more sound from the baby's room. But what you actually hear from the Parent Unit still doesn't sound very loud. I did a comparison test with my Graco Deluxe iMonitor bought in 2006, and the Graco's volume was louder. This is the reason why my wife wants to keep leave the Graco one in the baby's room as a back-up.
The INTERCOM, when heard in the baby's room, sounds harsh. I was speaking into the Parent unit 12" away (as recommended by the manual). But I still sounded a bit like a robot. My old Graco baby monitor didn't have this feature, so I can't complain too much. What puzzles me though is that I can play lullabies when I push a button on the Baby Unit. However, I can't remotely play the lullabies from the Parent Unit. Instead, the Parent Unit's LCD screen strangely indicates when a lullaby is playing but I can't turn it on and off from there.
The LCD SCREEN as you might have seen in other reviews is very flawed. It has a very bright blue light which washes out all of the information displayed on it. In a dimly lit room, it's hard to read. In a dark room, it's even harder to read.
The Parent Unit has a lanyard and belt clip which allows you to keep it with you. I wish there was an option to but another Parent Unit to keep somewhere else in the house. If you misplace the Parent Unit, you can always page it from the Baby Unit. But to have one at your desk and another in your bedroom would have been ideal.
>> CONCLUSION <<
Some minor drawbacks (LCD screen) and some larger drawbacks (low volume) prevent this baby monitor from being great. It's more than adequate for most people. But if you're a heavy sleeper, I wouldn't recommend this one since you might not hear your kid crying... which is the primary purpose of a baby monitor.
SIDE NOTE
If you buy one, please note that the manual recommends charging the Parent Unit for 10 hours before first using it.

Overall, this is a pretty good monitor. Here is what I like:
1. Both the parent and baby unit are small.
2. The parent unit works like a cordless phone where it sits on a base and has a rechargeable battery. My biggest complaint about my old baby monitor was that the batteries were always dead. This unit doesn't have that problem.
3. No feedback at all!
4. Unit has the ability to control the sensitivity. I put mine on about a 3 out of 5 and it is extremely sensitive.
5. Baby unit plugs in, but can also use batteries as a backup so there is no worry about losing your monitor power in a power outage.
6. If the parent and baby unit aren't connected, the parent unit beeps to alert you.
The one thing I don't like is that the temperature reading is way off. It runs about 6-7 degrees high. Very often, it is flashing telling me it is 80 degrees in the baby's room when it is really about 73. This was a big selling feature to me so it is quite a letdown that it isn't accurate.

Our Sony monitor, which had served us well for 1 1/2 years, was starting to fritz out, making odd clicking noises for no reason, so I was really excited to have the chance to review this monitor.
First off, the sound quality on the DECT is AWESOME! It truly is crystal-clear, and we have had zero problems with interference. That's important to us, as we have tons of wireless electronics.
(The monitor is not particularly loud, so it might not be a good choice if you have a really noisy household or need a monitor in a place with a lot of background noise. And you can't hear breathing, though that's not a big concern for me, as my kid is a toddler. And if you really -need- to be able to hear your child's breathing for health reasons, they have special monitors for that.)
I love all the features -- though my personal favorite is that the base takes batteries, so you can put it ANYWHERE. If our son falls asleep someplace unuusal, or we want to go to Grandma's house and he'll need a nap when he's there, we can just put the base next to him and not worry about plugging it in or bringing along the cord and plug. Also very handy in the event of a power outage, which we had recently at our home!
We also really like the fact that you can talk to the base via the parent unit. It's helpful for reassuring our son, if we can't get to him immediately, and just for talking to my husband (or vice versa) if one of us happens to be in the room with the base and the other needs something from there.
The temperature sensor is also handy; it'll even beep if the temperature in the room goes above or below certain levels (you can change these, or turn the feature off).
The base plays lullabies and has a nightlight feature, as well, though we haven't used those much yet.
I really like that the parent unit is compact and portable. (It comes with a belt clip, too, which I've found handy for when I'm doing things like laundry.) And if you lose it, you can page it from the base unit. We've managed to keep track of it so far, but I'm sure soon enough we'll be using that feature so that we can locate it under the couch or wherever else our little guy decides it belongs :)

Philips Avent Digital Screen Baby Monitor w/DECT Technology received 3 out of 4 stars due to its faulty or limited battery technology. The unit suggests using non-rechargeable batteries for the receiver, and the second piece using a Philips-brand sealed battery, which is only available through the manufacturer. Such battery systems are aimed at guaranteeing repeat customer business, rather than allowing one to use generic brands or their own rechargeable batteries. In the new age of smart, intuitive, environmentally-friendly products, Philips scores low because of an unfavorable cell integration.
On the upside, the company's motto is "sense and simplicity," and this monitor proves that with its many great features. This unit is sold in both a digital and analog version; however, this digital version would be best served with a more attractive LED, but that may affect the price. Some physiognomies that are advantageous include the 1,000+ square foot range, temperature monitor, two-way talk back feature, automatic channel selection, and Zero interference feature, which generates virtually no signal static.
