5 out of 5 stars The BEST cloth diaper!   May 10, 2007

I have the unbleached size 2's for my little boy, and both my husband and I love them. Most of the time we don't even use a cover because our little guy runs around in just a diaper (and shirt), and we change him when he pees. During hot weather we put him to bed in a kissaluv with a Stacinator So Simple wool cover, and he doesn't get all funky sweaty as he nurses to sleep. But then we use Bumgenius 2.0 with a diaper doubler for the rest of the nighttime diapers. Works AWESOME.

So if you are new to cloth diapering, I know it can be very overwhelming to choose what kind of "system" you will be most comfortable with. Well, Kissaluv fitted diapers are probably *the* best diaper for newborn thru potty training...which is why of allll the diapers out there, these finally made it to Amazon. I really like the snaps, so no scratching from velcro. And you *really* do get a custom fit with the snaps, something I was totally skeptical of. The elastic is very gentle, yet holds well. I wish we had these during the newborn explosive poo stage. I would recommend the Bummis Super Snap cover if you don't want to use wool. Bummis covers can be washed and dried with your diapers. And once again, no velcro (unless you get the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap, which as the name implies does NOT whisper when unhooking the velcro). Snaps are super handy when is comes to washing, because with velcro you have to fasten all the tabs before laundering...not a huge deal, but still just one more thing.

Washing is REALLY easy. Way easier than driving to Target to buy disposables =) If your baby is exclusively breastfed (so, at least 6 months and younger) then you do *not* need to dispose of the poo in the toilet first (when your baby is older, a diaper sprayer works well for this). Breastmilk poo is water soluble! To wash your diapers, set the water to cold and do a pre-rinse at the highest water level (for a full load). Then set to hot/cold and add 3 tablespoons powder Tide, with an extra rinse. All done. I dry my diapers on medium...or if its really hot out I line dry them. But be warned, they can take all day to dry outside. You can fluff them in the dryer if line drying makes them stiff.

How many will you need? For newborn, I'd say 50-60. Yeah, sounds like a lot...but you will be changing diapers 20-25 times per day, and this way you can do laundery every other day. Really expensive you say? You'll spend this much on disposables...and at least your baby will be way more comfortable not wearing plastic. Besides, you can sell them on eBay to make some $$ back, or use 'em for the next kid. The Size 0 lasts quite awhile, so you will definitely get your money's worth. You will need at least 6-8 covers. You don't need to wash covers every time, unless they get poo on them. Just let them dry and rotate use. This is why I like wool, for its antimicrobial properties.

I really hope this helps you make the choice to use cloth diapers. Cloth diapering is a huge investment, but it really pays off. Our diapers are probably the biggest-ticket items we bought for baby (we bought a lot of bumgenius 2.0 as well), but we didn't spend money on other things such as a crib, nursery decor, or formula.
