| Customer Reviews:
Unusual and Useful January 4, 2009 AW (AZ) My mother had found a different baby hammock, which she'd hoped would help my son sleep, but this one is much cheaper, and the design is almost identical. This hammock is suspended by two points, whereas the other one has one in the center. Design-wise, the hammock part is just a flat bag with a mattress in it. It's suspended by two heavy springs, covered in cloth sleeves. The sheet that came with this was an odd, fleecy one, with a harness attached to it, which we've never used. Instead, my mother made some simple cotton envelopes for the mattress. These stay in place fine, without the velcro which the included sheet used. I'd really recommend making your own sheets, since one isn't enough, and the fleece seemed too warm. In theory, the springs on this cause any movement the baby makes to rock the hammock, and soothe the baby back to sleep. In reality, it's not quite so simple, but it's very easy to see if the baby's stirring, and go over and rock the hammock enough to get the baby back to sleep. When my son was very small, and I was exhausted, I could lie on the couch and push the hammock. I tend to put him in it when he's sleepy after nursing, and rock him until he sleeps, which works pretty well, and is easy to do. The hammock will keep rocking long enough to let you pour a cup of tea, or use the bathroom quickly. The mattress doesn't have anything to stiffen it, so it's not going to contribute to a flattened skull. It is, however, plastic covered, so it tends to get sweaty. Stick a prefold diaper on it to take care of that. While you're at it, clip some clothespins on top to hold bibs, and use a couple diaper pins to fold the flap on the top back into a pocket for pacifiers. Forget about the straps on the back edges that are meant to raise the baby's head up, since all those do is fold the back part up vertically, and essentially shorten the sleeping space. Not harmful, but not useful, either. Also, do bear in mind that airflow through the side mesh isn't great, but it's hard to see through, and lack of distractions helps avoid waking a sleepy baby. This is definitely a product I'd buy again. At six months, my son still fits in it, though I don't know how much more use we'll get from it. It's also narrow enough to fit through a standard door, and can be disassembled into several rods and a smallish bundle of cloth and mattress, so it would store well. It's not perfect, but it's easy to improve upon by yourself. Because it's boring being in it, a wakeful baby's going to get frustrated quickly, so it's not a good spot to set one down. It is great for helping sleepy babies sleep, though, and stay sleeping.
useless contraption December 22, 2008 V. Agena (Texas) My baby needs to be held constantly so I purchased this thinking the swinging motion would help console her if I needed to put her down. It didn't work out. The fit is unnatural to a babies body and when she is lying in the swing, her feet are higher than her head. Also, her head was at a severe angle with her chin sitting on her chest - this made her mad. No amount of adjustments corrected this. It's designed badly and a waste of money! It's certainly not worth the price they charge.
